Dish and Dine continued...

Originated in Spain, the word “tapas” meaning snacks were served as appetizers but nowadays, tapas are typically smaller portions shared by diners – and Midnight Blue improves upon this fun, tradition with a twist of flavors that are so delectable that sharing might be out of the question!

Jephanie and business partner Vanda catered the VIP reception for Juno’s 3rd Annual Gala (who can forget those crab cakes?). “We feel very fortunate to be able to give something back to the community,” says Vanda, “for us the Juno Foundation is like a very good friend, willing to help, provide support and to be there when needed most.”

Midnight Blue serves dinner Tuesday thru Saturday 6:00pm until – you guessed it - Midnight.  However, the real added bonus is Midnight Blue serves Brunch 11:00 ‘til 3:00 on Sunday AND Saturday.  <more about Midnight Blue’s menu>

The brunch menu has at least 5 items priced $3, $5, $7 and $11. Small plates are stacked on the table waiting to be filled and passed. Remember- sharing is a good thing.

Brunch starts with $3 sides like chicken apple sausage, hash browns with caramelized onions cheese grits to two eggs cooked to your liking.

Over on the $5 section you’ll Lemon Blueberry pancakes, Orange vanilla French toast and the already famous… Macaroni and Cheese but with white cheddar cheese, bacon, tomato and chive - it’s not your mom’s Mac and Cheese (Get two for the table).

The $7 dishes are a little heartier. Chicken fried chicken with sausage gravy, a choice of frittatas- either smoked ham and cheese with peppers and onion or a medley of veggies including spinach, artichoke and roasted tomatoes with Swiss cheese.

The $11 dishes are pretty much full entrees (bigger portions) but they certainly can easily be shared.  The breakfast burrito with chorizo, scrambled eggs, spicy salsa, avocado, sour cream and Jack cheese is fit for a goddess with an appetite. Crab cake benedict with lemon caper hollandaise will melt in your mouth and the Spicy shrimp and grits with bacon and Parmesan will change your mind about sharing.

The dinner menu has at least 7 items arranged by price- $5, $7, $11 and $15.

Just a few items from the $5.00 section are: for potato lovers there are several unique choices- one being the artichoke, potato and Gruyere cheese custard (you will not know if you should eat this or just rub it all over you!).

The green salad with golden raisins, goat cheese, candied macadamia nuts, curry vinaigrette is wonderful paired with the Hedges CSM White Wine.

Some favorites on the $7.00 portion of the menu where your selections are a little more eclectic:

Oyster shooters- if you have oyster lovers in your group, it is a must to get two orders for the table. 4 oysters are in an order and each arrives in a little stainless ramekin covered with a lemony spicy concoction of a citrus-soy sauce, Japanese spices and jicama -a spicy little root. Delicious!

Grilled Lamb Kabobs- these are spicy and oh so tasty. The shredded cucumber salad with yogurt sauce is a perfect balance to cool down the spiciness.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich- Again, this is not your mom’s grilled cheese. Smoked Gouda cheese grilled on homemade bread with sweet tomato chutney on the side makes it easy to dip between bites.

With the $11 and $15 items you get into some of the heartier dishes:

Mini Kobe beef sliders with gorgonzola cheese and caramelized onion aioli- (4 to an order) These are little hamburgers….think Krystal burgers- but ONLY in size. Kobe beef is not to be compared to Krystal in anyway. It is a high end type of beef renowned for its flavor and tenderness. Note they have a tendency to come a little on the rare side…which is the way they should be. This is a perfect dish to share because they can be quite filling for one person. These are available for Brunch as well.

Lump Crab Cake with a cucumber salad and caper remoulade is reminiscent of the Chesapeake Bay area. Lots of sweet crab meat in a big cake, it’s just plain melt in your mouth delicious. Everyone grab a fork and pass it around!

These are just a few of some of the items of the menu. Other dishes to enjoy are Pork Ribs with Citrus Slaw. Lemongrass Grilled Beef Skewers with a mint and cilantro dipping sauce, Rosemary grilled Mahi Mahi and Sesame encrusted Ahi Tuna with fabulous mango, avocado, cucumber wasabi caviar.

To round out your dining experience you’ll have a choice of the more than 30 red and white wines (and sparkling bubblies). Added to the wine list are a section of cheese platters. Choose any 3 for $8 or any 5 for $13.  Choosing from a selection from around the globe and become quite perplexing and overwhelming. So you will find your server can educate you on such cheeses as the triple cream brie from Australia, the Truffle cheese from Italy or”mature” cheddar with malt whiskey from England as well as make suggestions of the best wines to pair with them.

Chef owner/goddess Jephanie Foster has been in the culinary circles in Orlando for quite sometime.  Starting with the Swan Hotel at Disney, Jepahnie has cooked her way through Moorefield’s (one of the first “gourmet” experiences in downtown Orlando in the 1990’s), moved to Chicago to broaden her skills then back to Orlando at the fabulous Roy’s on Sandlake Road.  Blue Bistro Bar and Grill has been thriving at the Mills Avenue location (3 blocks north of Colonial Dr.) for over 3 years. In addition to rave reviews and articles by the Orlando Sentinel’s top food critic, Scott Joseph, Jephanie has received the Most Outstanding Emerging Chef in 2006 by the Orlando Leisure Spoon Awards.
